Additive and non-additive genetic effects for fruit traits of ornamental pepper Horticultura Brasileira
Pessoa,Angela Maria dos S; Rêgo,Elizanilda R do; Rêgo,Maílson M do.
ABSTRACT Pepper plants can be used as ornamental ones due to the contrasting traits of plants, flowers, and especially fruits. This variability can be exploited in genetic improvement programs aiming at identifying superior genotypes and obtaining hybrids. This work aimed to select parental and hybrid individuals through diallel analysis for fruit traits in Capsicum annuum. Seven pepper genotypes were crossed, and eleven fruit-related quantitative traits were evaluated. The data were subjected to diallel analysis using Griffing’s Method 1 (fixed model). There was a predominance of additive genetic effects on the fruit traits of ornamental pepper plants. Genotypes UFPB77.3 and UFPB390 are indicated as parents for the improvement of ornamental pepper plants,...

Choice of common bean parents based on combining ability estimates Genet. Mol. Biol.
Machado,Cristina de Fátima; Santos,João Bosco dos; Nunes,Glauber Henrique de Sousa; Ramalho,Magno Antonio Patto.
The obtention of genetically improved cultivars is the main objective of breeding programs, whose efficiency is increased by a careful choice of parents. Based on both general (GCA) and specific (SCA) combining abilities for grain yield, the purpose of this research was to choose the most promising populations of common beans, for line selection. GCA and SCA were measured by means of a complete diallel without reciprocals, using twelve cultivars/lines. Parents and corresponding F2 segregating populations were evaluated for grain yield by a 9 x 9 triple square lattice design. It was found that the segregating populations differed in grain yield, with predominant SCA effects, but with significant GCA effects as well. Among the populations derived from...

Combining ability of elite clones of Eucalyptus grandis and Eucalyptus urophylla with Eucalyptus globulus Genet. Mol. Biol.
Bison,Odair; Ramalho,Magno Antonio Patto; Rezende,Gabriel Dehon Sampaio Peçanha; Aguiar,Aurélio Mendes; Resende,Marcos Deon Vilela de.
In Brazil, eucalyptus breeding programs for cellulose production has used two species, Eucalyptus grandis and Eucalyptus urophylla. Nevertheless, it would be useful to introgress alleles from other species to improve wood quality and volume. The objective of this research was to evaluate the hybrid potential of elite clones of E. grandis and E. urophylla from the Aracruz Celulose Company S. A. with Eucalyptus globulus clones. To do so, six elite clones were crossed with ten E. globulus clones in a half-diallel mating design. The resulting hybrid combinations as well as the four check clones were evaluated in randomized complete block experiments with single plant plots and 40 replicates from September to October 2001 at three Brazilian sites, Aracruz and...

Combining ability of maize grain yield under different levels of environmental stress PAB
Souza,Leandro Vagno de; Miranda,Glauco Vieira; Galvão,João Carlos Cardoso; Guimarães,Lauro José Moreira; Santos,Izabel Cristina dos.
The objectives of this work were to caracterize the tropical maize germplasm and to compare the combining abilities of maize grain yield under different levels of environmental stress. A diallel was performed among tropical maize cultivars with wide adaptability, whose hybrid combinations were evaluated in two sowing dates, in two years. The significance of the environmental effect emphasized the environmental contrasts. Based on grain yield, the environments were classified as favorable (8,331 kg ha-1), low stress (6,637 kg ha-1), high stress (5,495 kg ha-1), and intense stress (2,443 kg ha-1). None of the genetic effects were significant in favorable and intense stress environments, indicating that there was low germplasm variability under these...

Combining ability of tropical maize cultivars in organic and conventional production systems Ciência Rural
Oliveira,Lucimar Rodrigues de; Miranda,Glauco Vieira; DeLima,Rodrigo Oliveira; Souza,Leandro Vagno de; Galvão,João Carlos Cardoso; Santos,Izabel Cristina dos.
The objectives were to identify maize germplasm for the organic productions system and to compare the genetic effects of the grain yield of maize cultivars in organic and conventional production systems. Diallel crosses were made between six maize cultivars and the hybrid combinations were evaluated in conventional and organic production systems. The hybrid combinations produced different grain yields in the two production systems. The interaction between general combining ability and production systems was significant for grain yield, ear height and number of ears. This indicates that the additive genetic effects differ in organic and conventional production systems. The specific combining abilities (SCA) were significant for grain yield and plant height,...

Genetic Analysis of Relative Cell Injury Percentage and Some Yield Contributing Traits in Wheat Under Nomral and Heat Stress Conditions Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Farooq,Jehanzeb; Khaliq,Ihsan; Kashif,Muhammad; Ali,Qurban; Mahpara,Shahzadi.
Several wheat genotypes were screened against heat stress. Seven wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars obtained after screening against heat classified as tolerant, moderately tolerant, and susceptible to heat stress, were mated in a complete diallel mating system to study the inheritance pattern of relative cell injury percentage (cell injury %) and some yield contributing parameters under normal and heat stress conditions. Significant genotypic differences were found (P < 0.01) for all the studied traits under both regimes. The scaling test disclosed partial adequacy for traits such as days to heading and days to maturity, but for flag leaf area and relative cell injury %, it showed full sufficiency under both environments. The model for grain yield...

Genetic distance estimated by RAPD markers and its relationship with hybrid performance in maize PAB
Bruel,Daniela Cristina; Carpentieri-Pípolo,Valéria; Gerage,Antonio Carlos; Fonseca Júnior,Nelson da Silva; Prete,Cássio Egídio Cavenaghi; Ruas,Claudete de Fátima; Ruas,Paulo Maurício; Souza,Silvia Graciele Hülse de; Garbuglio,Deoclécio Domingos.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the genetic diversity of 16 maize inbred lines, and to determine the correlation between genetic distance and hybrid performance, using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) molecular markers. Twenty-two different random primers were used, which resulted in the amplification of 265 fragments, 237 (84.44%) of them being polymorphic. A genetic similarity matrix was created from the RAPD data, using Jaccard coefficient, and a dendrogram was constructed. Hybrid analyses were carried out using random block design and Griffing method VI for diallel crossings. The genetic associations showed five distinct heterotic groups. Correlations between genetic divergences detected by RAPD, as well as the means observed in the...

Rocha,Daniel Sarto; Rovaris,Sara Regina Silvestrin; Rodrigues,Cinthia Souza; Ticelli,Marcelo; Sawazaki,Eduardo; Paterniani,Maria Elisa Ayres Guidetti Zagatto.
ABSTRACT Brazil is one of the leading countries in the production of maize (Zea mays), with great potential for growing green maize, which has a superior commercial value in relation to maize marketed in the form of grains. Although important, the availability of cultivars recommended for the production of green maizeis still very scarce. The objectives of the present study were to estimate genetic parameters and to identify promising hybrid combinations for the development of new green maize cultivars to farmers. In the summer crop of 2016/17, ten hybrid combinations obtained through a complete diallel of five maize populations, with attributes for in natura consumption, were evaluated in two sites of the state of São Paulo, Brazil: the Instituto...

Pacheco,Cleso Antônio Patto; Santos,Manoel Xavier dos; Cruz,Cosme Damião; Parentoni,Sidney Netto; Guimarães,Paulo Evaristo de Oliveira; Gama,Elto Eugênio Gomes e; Silva,Álvaro Eleutério da; Carvalho,Hélio Wilson Lemos de; Vieira Júnior,Pedro Abel.
The study of inbreeding depression is important for breeding strategies such as use of inbred progenies or extraction of inbreed lines. A diallel of 28 maize open-pollinated varieties was evaluated in 10 environments in the early 1990s. At the same time, S1 populations for each of the 28 varieties were evaluated in the same 10 experiments (environments). Yield reductions of the populations from S0 to S1 (mean of the 10 environments), varied from 34.6% (CMS-01) to 59.2% (CMS-30), with an average of 49.1%. Inbreeding depression was greater in populations with a wider genetic base, which had never been exposed to inbreeding (CMS-30, BR-107, PH4, Cunha, Saracura, Nitrodent, and Nitroflint). Inbred lines with greater yield means should be obtained from the...

Multivariate analysis of combining ability for soybean resistance to Cercospora sojina Hara Genet. Mol. Biol.
Gravina,Geraldo de Amaral; Sediyama,Carlos Sigueyuki; Martins Filho,Sebastião; Moreira,Maurílio Alves; Barros,Everaldo Gonçalves de; Cruz,Cosme Damião.
Seven soybean cultivars (Bossier, Cristalina, Davis, Kent, Lincoln, Paraná and Uberaba), with different levels of resistance to Cercospora sojina, race 04, were crossed according to a diallel design, with no reciprocals, to determine the general and the specific combining abilities for the resistance. The evaluations of the reaction to the disease were performed 20 days after the inoculation of the fungus on the most infected leaflet of the plant, in the parents and in the F1 hybrids. To quantify the resistance, the following characteristics were evaluated: infection degree (ID); number of lesions per leaflet (NLL); lesion mean diameter (LMD); lesioned leaf area (LLA); percentage of lesioned leaf area (PLLA); number of lesions per square centimeter (NLC)...

Performance of testers with different genetic structure for evaluation of maize inbred lines Ciência Rural
Guimarães,Lauro José Moreira; Miranda,Glauco Vieira; DeLima,Rodrigo Oliveira; Maia,Ciro; Oliveira,Lucimar Rodrigues de; Souza,Leandro Vagno de.
The objective of this study was to evaluate four maize testers for identification of superior inbreed lines in testcross. The four testers evaluated are cultivars with narrow or wide genetic base (single-cross hybrids and open pollinated varieties) and two kernel types (flint or dent). SynD and SynF testers are open pollinated varieties with dent and flint kernels, respectively, and FSH and DSH testers are single-cross hybrids with flint and dent kernels, respectively. SynD tester showed the biggest genetic variance among the maize inbreed lines in crosses. The effects of general combining ability (GCA) for lines and specific combining ability (SCA) for lines x testers were significant, whereas GCA effects for testers were not significant. SynD and SynF...

Selection of maize top-crosses for different nitrogen levels through specific combining ability Bragantia
Heinz,Rafael; Ribeiro,Larissa Pereira; Gonçalves,Manoel Carlos; Bhering,Leonardo Lopes; Teodoro,Paulo Eduardo.
ABSTRACT An alternative to increase yield without raising the production costs and minimizing the dependence of agricultural inputs is the development of maize genotypes presenting high nitrogen (N) use efficiency under low N level conditions. Thus, the objective of this study was to estimate the specific combining ability of maize top-crosses under high and low nitrogen (N) conditions and to select high-yielding hybrids for both conditions. The grain yield of 110 top-cross hybrids was evaluated in 2012 in two locations in the Brazilian Midwest. Partial diallel analysis was performed with the adjusted means of each of the individual top-cross analyses. Specific combining ability (SCA) of the hybrids and their interaction with N levels was estimated for...
